From the Desk of Schuba...


I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Mother’s Day and were able to spend time with family and friends giving thanks for the irreplaceable role parents play in our lives. Another irreplaceable person, School Secretary, Alexis Walker, is leaving Izzi B. at the end of this school year to advance her career. While I am excited for her, she will be dearly missed. I’ve had the privilege to work with her this year and see the incredible impact she makes among both adults and children in our community!


Hiring Update:

  • We've completed 2nd grade interviews and will announce the finalist after the District's Human Resources Team gives us the approval.

  • We've completed school psychologist interviews and are in the process of completing reference checks.

  • We're in the process of interviewing for Alexis' position.

Our Council Meeting last week hit a record high for parent attendance - biggest circle by far. Thank you all for your input on spending priorities outside of our ongoing, annual financial commitments known as the “Evergreen” funds. We will send a recap of the meeting later this week for those of you who may have missed the meeting.


Congratulations to IBCS Parents, Joshua Lin and Jessica Tribe, who were approved to serve on the 2019-2020 Council Board; incoming staff representatives are Fifth Grade Teacher, Jen Courtney-Keyse, and Gym Teacher, Kevin Ross. Welcome!


And lastly, a shout out to IBCS Art Teacher, Morgan Cofer, for her vision and dedication to making this year's Izzi B. Art Show an overwhelming success. The night was beautifully orchestrated with student-selected masterpieces showcasing their artist talents from this school year.

Library Happenings

Lots of news from the Library during these final weeks of school:

  • Book-checkout for the school year is now closed as we begin collecting the more than 900 books currently home with students. If you've received a late book notice, please locate the book(s) and send them to school with your student(s). Last year, we ended the year with more than 80 books missing. Lets commit to doing better this year!

  • Izzi B. will have ONE MORE Scholastic Book fair before we break for summer. During Arts Week, a to-be-determined location within the school will host the BOGO (buy-one, get-one) fair featuring many of our students' favorites. This is a great way to stock up for summer reading. The book fair is before and after school on Tuesday, May 28, Wednesday, May 29 and Thursday, May 30, with accessibility during Arts Week events throughout the school day. Look for a flyer arriving home this week with more information, as well as a new system for students to purchase books called e-wallet!

  • Students are getting a refresher course on how to utilize the online book resources, DPS Lion and Overdrive, so they can continue to read books over summer break. Please encourage your students to seek out books and e-books to keep up their reading while on break!

IBCS Garden Love

Green thumb or not, what our garden needs now is someone with a truck or flatbed trailer to coordinate transport of cattle panels from their current location to the school. If you can help, please send a text to IBCS Parent and Garden Volunteer, Sarah Halverson, at 720-335-8435.

What's Going on With...


Let’s Get the Fun Running

Join your IBCS Community this Friday, May 17, 8:30-10:30 a.m., to watch our students run in the name of community and fitness. All week, fun grade-level incentives are planned to encourage collaboration and team building; Schuba’s even offered up an end-of-year challenge...the grade who earns the most per lap can duct tape her to a wall. Although the driving intent of the run is to bring our community together, if you want to donate funds or solicit donations from family and friends, sign your student(s) up to receive contributions for Izzi B. in honor of your student.


Field Day is Approaching

Izzi B’s Fifth Annual Field Day is Thursday, May 30, and will feature events such as an Shoe Scramble, Sponge Relay, Parachute, Egg Race, Water Hurdles and more. Because water is included with some of our events, students may wear their swimsuits; however, they must have clothes over them. We’d like to see as many students as possible wear their Izzi B. shirts. Students can also bring a change of clothes for after the events. All students must wear tennis shoes. Please send your children to school with filled water bottles to ensure they stay hydrated throughout the day; water refill stations will be available. Children should also come to school with sunscreen already applied.


To help make the event a success, we need parent volunteers who can help run and support some of the stations. If you are interested in volunteering, please let Gym Teacher, Kevin Ross, know your availability.

Author Visit During Arts Week

Stan Yan, Denver-based writer/illustrator, caricature artist and instructor, will visit IBCS on Wednesday, May 29, as part of Arts Week. Stan is the author of There’s a Zombie in the Basement and many others. IBCS will have 25 copies of There’s a Zombie in the Basement for sale via myschoolbucks.com; once these sell out, families can purchase books online via Tattered Cover. Online orders with SCHOOL PICK UP are only available for one week after Stan's school visit. Orders placed after this time will need to be picked up at one of Tattered Cover's locations, or shipped to your home address. If you have any questions about your ONLINE ORDER, please email books@tatteredcover.com.

May Dine & Donate

Join us for our last Dine & Donate of the year! Dog Haus in Northfield will donate 20 percent of all sales on Tuesday, May 21 to Izzi B. Just mention the school as you check out. This is an all day event (hours are 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.), so swing by for lunch, dinner, or to enjoy a beverage on the patio! Dog Haus is located near the movie theater in Northfield across from Bar Louie (8316 Northfield Blvd.) Visit the restaurant website for the menu.
